Football at Salesian

Salesian School Chertsey is a school with a fine tradition of producing strong footballing sides right through the academic years, winning numerous District and County honours (see below). If you can help us fill in the gaps in our history please contact mgoulborn@salesian.surrey.sch.uk

Salesian has a history of touring places in the UK and abroad with past trips to Belgium, Gibralter and various places in the North of England. The following account is a write up of the U15s tour in 2012.

Chertsey in the North West

On a rainy Friday morning in January, 14 boys set off at 07:30 from Salesian School Chertsey accompanied by Dr Lydon and Mr Bicknell to play two games against Thornleigh Salesian College Bolton and Savio Salesian College Bootle. After a relatively uneventful journey the team lost 2-3 in a close game to a Thornleigh. Following welcome refreshments with the Bolton team the boys travelled to Southport and settled into the Talbot Hotel. We then set off for a tour of the City of Liverpool, guided by Fr Gerard Briody SDB, Headteacher of Savio, accompanied by Br Sandy Fairley SDB. Despite his extremely busy schedule Fr Briody organised a comprehensive tour including a visit to Anfield and the Memorial to the Hillsborough Disaster victims.

On the Saturday morning the team played Savio and lost 1-3 in a sporting game again played in very challenging weather conditions. Lunch was provided by our hosts who also agreed that we use the Don Bosco Centre where the team enjoyed games of table tennis and pool. We then set off to watch a Premier League Game at Goodison Park, Everton v Blackburn, for which tickets had been acquired for a very attractive price.

There is a long-standing tradition of Football Tours between the Salesian network of schools. The team of 2012 behaved in an exemplary fashion which was appreciated by our hosts. The team thanks, in particular, Mr Chris Bingley and Mr Stephen Talbot, PE teachers of Thornleigh and Savio respectively, and the Headteacher of Bootle who concerned himself with the minutest details to ensure that the tour was a success.

Year 10 Squad: William Brown, Bailey Mummery, Christian Paxia, Thomas Brown, Kieran Ahern, Lewis Hester, Adam Mooney, Jack Moore (captain), Fabrizio Feniello, Kai Stoneman, Oliver Tiernan, Carl Robert, Shaun Perryment, William Uncles

Salesian School Old Boys

www.chertseyoldsalesians.co.uk
An Old Boys Football Club has been running since 1970, it was started by a small group of pupils leaving the school who wanted to carry on playing football together. They first played in the Woking & District League, and then joined The London Old Boys League in 1976.

The London Old Boys League (since 2002 amalgamated with the Southern Olympian League, and now called The Amateur Football Combination), is basically made up of similar clubs formed from past pupils of various schools in and around London. Some of them have been around for over 100 years, so we are one of the younger clubs. The League claims to be the biggest in Europe with over 270 teams from 60 odd clubs playing in 26 divisions.

We currently run two sides, although at our peak we ran seven. We cut it down because with players retiring and no decent recruitment policy in place, we were struggling to field full strength teams.

The Club has always been reasonably successful, and until recently the 1st team were in the Premier division of the League, which is probably, along with University leagues, among the best standard of football you can play without being paid. We have had several players who have played at semi pro level, but prefer to play for us because whilst the standard is high, it’s not taken too seriously, and the social side of the Club is a big attraction. At the same time because the league is so large we can cater for players at all levels of ability - as long as there is someone willing to run a team.

We run the Club as a Club, and not separate teams. Each week the Committee meets to discuss the previous week’s games, and decide on selection for the following week. The Captains (starting from the 1st team down), take advice from their fellow captains and choose the best side on merit. Our aim over the next few years is to encourage more youngsters from the school particularly (but not exclusively) to join, so that us old’uns can move down a team or two, whilst helping a new generation to come through and enjoy the same craic that many of us have had for the past 10 to 20 years.

Our playing base is Imber Court – The Met Police ground in Molesey – facilities there are excellent, and the hospitality afterwards includes hot food for the opposition, and cold drinks are served aplenty amidst stories of 40 yard screamers and “we wuz robbed” excuses.

Rugby Union   Read more

Rugby at Salesian - Established 1967

Under the stewardship of former Head of PE Mr Matthew Whitfield (2001-2013), Salesian School undertook somewhat of a "Rugby Revolution" during the 2000s winning countless County Cup competitions. Our most successful campaign was the 2006/2007 season where we dominated the Surrey Schools Cup Competition. In this season our Year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 sides were all crowned champions on finals day after five sensational cup runs.

Noteworthy year groups include the intake of 2005/2006 who won the Surrey Schools Cup in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. They were beaten finalists in Year 11. And the 2006/2007 intake who won the Surrey Schools Cup on four occasions, missing out only once in the 2009/2010 competition where they came runners up.

Since 2008 the school's First XV has been managed by Mr Paul Bryce and has achieved notable success for a relatively small Rugby intake. Highlights of the past 5 seasons have included reaching the Daily Mail Cup 4th round, losing to Reading Blue Coats and the Daily Mail Vase 5th round, losing by the finest of margins to Saffron Walden of Essex. The First XV enjoyed tour success in 2011 where they were undefeated in Ireland, beating a Belevedere School XV and a Malahide XV. In November 2012 the First XV toured Exeter and Devon where they lost to Exeter College and drew with Keynsham Colts.

In July 2013 Mr Whitfield left Salesian after 12 years at the school. Former Salesian player and current PE teacher Mr Chris Browne took over as Head of Rugby. Later that year the Floyd family became official sponsors of rugby at Salesian, generously donating the funds to buy four team kits for the boys and essential equipment for the school. We thank them for their continued support of Rugby in Chertsey.

Skiing   Read more

Salesian School Ski Club

Salesian School Ski Club currently runs two trips to Saalbach, Austria each year as well as numerous trips to indoor and outdoor slopes in the UK.

The school's ski club has been in existance since at least the late 1960s as the following report from the 1968 school magazine testifies.

The Austrian Holiday

Reported by Nicholas Jenkins, 1968

The snow sliding behind you, the skis gaining speed, the overwhelming sense of freedome and power; then splat! Your first fall. Well that's how it goes, at least until you gain confidence and some knowledge of how to ski.

The parties of boys from Chertsea and Battersea met together on schedule at Victoria and were soon on their way. The journey was long and tiring but it didn't seem too long before we arrived in Otz, to be greeted by magnificent scenary surrounding us.

We were soon settled in and by evening glad of the rest. The next morning we went by coach up the Otz Valley to Obergurgl, a ski resort 6,500 ft. above sea level.

Once togged with skis and boots we practised on the gentle nursery slopes of Obergurgl. The first happening of any real interest was a twenty yard run by Mr. Cleworth on his skis. You may say 'sp what?' but you try going twenty yards backwards downhill! Mind you I'm not saying it was done on purpose.

Everyone soon picked up a suntan, and found that they needed five to ten conts of sunburn cream to stop frying in the intense sun-light. Sun-glasses were essential and even with these Martin Allen of 4A still managed to get slight sun-blindness, however it was not to stop his skiing and he soon recovered.

Three boys didn't share the luck of the rest of the party, they were all from Battersea. The first boy, a novice, broke his leg on the second day, skiing at Obergurgl. The second boy's accident was far more serious. Whilst travelling on a fast, direct approach down the mountain, he realised, or so he said later, that he was going so fast (at an approximate 70mph was his guess) and trying to stem turn, one stick in a snow bank. The breaking of his leg was heard some twenty-five yards away by another boy, who had been following down. He was rushed to hospital and was soon resting more comfortably.

But for those few unlucky incidents, the holiday was a great success, everyone loved skiing and most reached quite a high standard, others, however were not so good; a few found great difficulty in stopping and dud ski slopes would be more in their line. After the first few days at Obergurgl, we went on to Khutai, the skiing there was much better and the party's enthusiasm grew. One afternoon some of us went up one very high ski lift to the peak of the mountain; the view was fantastic, everything looked so small from up there.

Purely by chance, on the way back, we met the school party returning from Rome. We arrived in Calais that morning at ten o'clock, went through customs, then onto the boat. An hour later we arrived in Folkestone; we then caught the train and finally, tired, but happy, arrived at Victoria.
